Egypt Egypt and Syria were original members of the UN on October 24, 1945. Following a referendum held on February 21, 1958, Egypt and Syria became united as the United Arab Republic, and continued as a single member in the UN. On October 13, 1961, Syria resumed its status as an independent state and its UN membership. On September 2, 1971, the United Arab Republic changed its name to Arab Republic of Egypt.
