China China became a founding member of the UN on October 24, 1945. The seat was then held by representatives of Chiang Kai-Shek (Taiwan). On October 25, 1971, the UN's General Assembly decided to transfer China's seat to representatives of the People's Republic of China under Mao Tse-Tung.
