State Structure

This variable gives the country's political structure, which may fall in either of two categories: UNITARY or FEDERAL. Where the State organization is unitary, legislative and executive institutions are on a single national level (as in France), while a federal structure places legislative and executive institutions on two complementary levels, one national and one sub-national (as in the US). In this case, legislative and executive powers are shared between the two levels.
