1801: Annexed to Russia. May 26, 1918: Treaty of independence from Russia. February 25, 1921: Georgian SSR created. December 30, 1922: The Georgian SSR joins the Transcaucasian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (TSFSR), which also includes Armenia and Azerbaijan. December 5, 1936: End of the TSFSR. The Georgian SSR becomes a constituent republic of the USSR. March 9, 1990: Declaration of sovereignty. April 9, 1991: Referendum on independence. Independence proclaimed. At the time of the collapse of the USSR, Georgia had not joined the CIS. October 8, 1993: CIS membership (12th member). December 1, 1993: The Georgian government and the Abkhaz rebels sign a peace agreement.
