Eritrea 1890: Italian colony. 1941: British occupation. September 15, 1952: One of the States of Ethiopia within a federal structure. 1961: Beginning of the war for independence from Ethiopia. November 14, 1962: Becomes one of the Provinces of Ethiopia within a unitary structure. September 12, 1974: Emperor of Ethiopia deposed. A republic is established. May 24, 1991: Taking of Asmara by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) leaded by Issaias Afeworke. April 1993: Referendum on independance from Ethiopia (positive result). May 24, 1993: Declaration of independence. Admitted to the OAS (52th member). May 27, 1993: Admitted to the UN (182th member of 190 sovereign countries). |
