November 16, 1532: The Spaniards under Francisco Pizarro found a colony, then called Quito. August 10, 1809: Uprising against Spanish rule. May 24, 1822: General Sucre defeats the Spaniards at Pichincha. Independence since that time. Part of the Republic of Gran Colombia, along with Venezuela, Colombia and Panama. May 13, 1830: Secedes from the Republic of Gran Colombia.
