Bulgaria 681: Independence from the Byzantine Empire. 1396: Ottoman invasion (Turkish rule). March 3, 1878: After the Russian invasion of Turkey, Bulgaria is freed from Ottoman hegemony, under the terms of the Treaty of San Stefano. July 13, 1878: By the Treaty of Berlin, the UK and the Austro-Hungarian Empire make Bulgaria into a Turkish principality. October 5, 1908: Bulgaria is freed once and for all from the Ottoman Empire (STY, 1994, p. 237). |
