1776: Bolivia is annexed to Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina within the vice-royalty of Rio de la Plata (Buenos Aires). July 28, 1821: Independence from Spain, as part of Peru. 1824: General Sucre wins decisive victory over the Spanish at Ayacucho (Peru). August 6, 1825: Independence from Peru, becoming the Republic of Upper Peru, renamed Bolivia in honour of its first president, Simon Bolivar.
