April 28, 1920: The Azerbaijan SSR is proclaimed. December 30, 1922: The Azerbaijan SSR joins the Transcaucasian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (TSFSR), which also includes Georgia and Armenia. December 5, 1936: End of the TSFSR. The Azerbaijan SSR becomes a constituent republic of the USSR. September 23, 1989: Declaration of sovereignty. August 30, 1991: Declaration of independence. December 21, 1991: CIS membership under the Alma-Ata agreement. October 7, 1992: Withdrawal from the CIS. September 24, 1993: Renews CIS membership (becoming the 11th member).
