November 12, 1918: Collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Republic of Austria is established. March 12, 1938: Hitler annexes Austria (Ostmark). 1945: Allied occupation (the United States, France, the UK and the USSR). May 15, 1955: End of the Allied occupation under the Austrian State Treaty. July 27, 1955: The last Allied troops leave. June 12, 1994: Referendum on joining the European Community (Maastricht Treaty): positive results. Austria becomes the 13th member of the EC.
