1747: The Persians are driven out, Ahmad Shah Durani founds the Afghan Empire. Independence from Britain is confirmed by the Rawalpindi Armistice of August 8, 1919 and the Kabul Treaty of November 22, 1921. August 19, 1919: Official independence. July 17, 1973: The king, Zahir Shah, is overthrown. The Republic is proclaimed. December 27, 1979: Soviet invasion. February 15, 1989: Withdrawal of Soviet forces completed. April 16, 1992: Muhammed Najibullah is driven from power.
