Sovereignty

This variable gives the important dates in the country's history, particularly in regards to its foundation and the acquisition of sovereignty or independence. For many countries, the date of birth is quite clear. For many others, however, this is not so, the way to independence often including a series of culminating events. In the data tables, the event associated with a given date is specified in parentheses. When the name in parentheses is of a country, it means that the country under consideration has achieved independence from the one mentioned in parentheses. Moreover, when the terms UN or LN appear along with the name of a country, it means that the country under consideration obtained its independence from the country mentioned in parentheses, and that the latter was administering the former under United Nations or League of Nations mandate.
